Spotted
The Obi Paradise-crow is a large, glossy black bird that resembles a crow, a less flamboyant relative within the Birds-of-Paradise family. It is known for its robust build and powerful bill. This species is primarily frugivorous but also eats insects, making it an important seed disperser in its habitat.
Where to spot
Endemic to Obi and Bisa Islands in North Maluku, Indonesia. It inhabits tropical moist lowland forests, often in the canopy or at forest edges.
How to spot
Look for its large, crow-like appearance and glossy black plumage. Listen for its distinctive, often rich and varied, calls which differentiate it from true crows. Scanning the canopy is important.
When to spot
Active during daylight hours, often more vocal and visible in the early morning and late afternoon. It is a resident species.
