Spotted
The Superb Bird-of-Paradise is a small, dramatic species famous for the male's extraordinary courtship display. He possesses a vibrant iridescent green-blue breast shield and a large, erectile black cape that forms a semi-circular fan around his head during display. The female is plain brownish.
Where to spot
Widespread across the montane forests of New Guinea. It inhabits tropical montane forests, typically at mid-elevations.
How to spot
Finding a male's display site is the key. Observe from a hidden position. Look for the male's transformation into his 'smiley face' shape. Females are inconspicuous. Listen for his distinctive snapping and whirring sounds during display.
When to spot
Active during daylight hours. Males display year-round, often in the early morning on a cleared patch of forest floor. It is a resident species.

During his courtship display, the male transforms into a black 'smiley face' with bright blue eyes, absorbing almost all light except for the iridescent breast shield, creating one of the most unique visual spectacles in the animal kingdom.
