Widespread across New Guinea and some nearby islands, including Aru Islands, Misool, and Salawati. It inhabits tropical lowland forests, swamp forests, and forest edges.

Look for its uniform glossy black plumage, which appears particularly oily. Its deep, resonant 'ooo-ooo-ooo' calls are a key identification feature. It generally forages in the mid to upper canopy.
