Spotted
The Northern Grosbeak-canary is a large, stout-billed finch with an olive-green back and yellowish underparts. Its heavy bill gives it a robust appearance.
Where to spot
Found in East Africa, particularly in Kenya and Uganda. It inhabits acacia woodlands, dry bushland, and savannas.
How to spot
Look for them in acacia trees or foraging on the ground. The large, heavy bill is a good field mark. Listen for its strong, often ringing calls.
When to spot
Visible year-round in its resident range. Most active during the breeding season, which is typically tied to the rainy seasons.
Its powerful bill allows it to feed on a wide range of seeds, including very hard ones, giving it a feeding advantage.
