Spotted
The Scarlet Finch is a stunningly vibrant finch, with males displaying brilliant scarlet-red plumage over most of their body. Females are duller, olive-brown. It inhabits montane forests and bamboo thickets.
Where to spot
Found across the Himalayas and Southeast Asia, including parts of Nepal, Bhutan, northeastern India, China, Myanmar, Thailand, Laos, and Vietnam. It prefers subtropical and temperate montane forests and bamboo thickets.
How to spot
Look for this finch in the mid-story and undergrowth of dense montane forests, often near bamboo. The male's brilliant scarlet plumage is unmistakable. Listen for its short, high-pitched, and somewhat buzzy calls.
When to spot
A year-round resident in much of its range, though it may undertake altitudinal movements in winter. Most conspicuous during the breeding season (spring/summer) when males are singing.
The intense scarlet coloration of the male is one of the most vivid among all finches, making it a highly sought-after sighting for birdwatchers.
