Spotted
The Chestnut-bellied Euphonia is a small, attractive finch, characterized by the male's glossy blue-black upperparts and a rich chestnut-colored belly. Females are duller, olive-green.
Where to spot
Endemic to the Atlantic Forest biome of southeastern Brazil, eastern Paraguay, and northeastern Argentina. It inhabits humid lowland forests and forest edges.
How to spot
Search the mid to upper canopy of humid forests and at forest edges. The male's glossy blue-black back and distinctive chestnut belly are key field marks. Listen for its high-pitched, often repetitive, and somewhat squeaky calls.
When to spot
Resident throughout its range, observable year-round. Best observed during early morning or late afternoon when they are actively foraging for fruits.
