Spotted
The Northern Fiscal is a common and widespread shrike species found across a large part of sub-Saharan Africa. It is characterized by its black upperparts, white underparts, and a long tail. This predatory bird inhabits open country, savannas, and gardens, often perching conspicuously.
Where to spot
Widespread across a large portion of sub-Saharan Africa, from Senegal east to Ethiopia, and south to parts of Central Africa. Favors open savannas, grasslands, agricultural areas, and suburban gardens.
How to spot
Easily spotted due to its bold black and white plumage and habit of perching prominently on bushes, fences, or wires. Look for its long tail. Listen for its distinctive, often harsh and chattering calls, which are frequently given.
When to spot
Resident and observable year-round throughout its range. Active during the day, often seen during the cooler parts of the morning and late afternoon.

The term 'Fiscal' in its name is believed to derive from the bird's upright, alert posture, reminiscent of a tax collector or 'fiscal' officer, watching over its territory.
