Spotted
The Abyssinian Owl is a medium-sized owl native to the montane forests of East Africa. It is characterized by its dark plumage and prominent ear tufts, blending well into its high-altitude habitat.
Where to spot
Restricted to highland forests, including bamboo thickets and moist evergreen woodlands, at high altitudes in the Ethiopian Highlands, parts of Kenya, and Uganda.
How to spot
Listen for its distinctive vocalizations, which are a series of hoots. Spotting it requires patience and often a spotlight in its dense, often misty, forest environment.
When to spot
Strictly nocturnal. The best observation opportunities are during the night, primarily by listening for their calls.
