Spotted
The Crested Quail-Dove is an elegant and endemic species to Jamaica, easily recognized by its unique, short erectile crest. It prefers the cool, humid environment of montane forests.
Where to spot
Endemic to Jamaica, primarily found in humid montane forests, particularly within the Blue and John Crow Mountains, at elevations generally above 500 meters.
How to spot
Search the forest floor in dense undergrowth, especially where leaf litter is plentiful. Listen carefully for its low, repetitive 'whu-hoo' or 'coo-coo-coo' call, which is often easier to detect than the bird itself. Patience is vital as they are quite shy.
When to spot
Year-round. Most vocal and active during the early morning hours, though it can be observed throughout the day quietly foraging.
