Endemic to Ngoc Linh mountain in Kon Tum Province, central Vietnam. Inhabits dense montane evergreen forests and bamboo thickets at very high elevations.

Listen for its distinctive, rather quiet, hooting or whistling calls, often given from dense cover. Look for subtle movements in the undergrowth. Its plain, somewhat mottled plumage offers good camouflage, making it hard to spot.
