The Mottled Pitohui is a distinctive songbird with a varied plumage of black, brown, and rufous, found in the forests of New Guinea. It is known for its rather secretive habits, often keeping to the understory.
Where to spot
Distributed across New Guinea, inhabiting lowland to lower montane rainforests, secondary growth, and forest edges.
How to spot
Identify by its unique mottled appearance, featuring a dark head, rufous belly, and variable black-and-brown upperparts. Listen for its often quiet, somewhat melancholy whistles and churring calls from dense vegetation.
When to spot
Present year-round. Activity peaks in the early mornings and late afternoons when it is most actively foraging.
This species is also known to carry toxins in its skin and feathers, acting as a deterrent against predators, a trait shared with other pitohui species.
