Spotted
The Narrow-billed Tody is another tiny, colorful endemic of Hispaniola, distinguished from its congener by a noticeably narrower bill. It sports brilliant green plumage and a bright red throat, adapted to highland forests.
Where to spot
Endemic to Hispaniola (Dominican Republic and Haiti), found primarily in moist montane pine and broadleaf forests at elevations above 800 meters.
How to spot
Seek it in the understory of montane forests. Though tiny, its bright colors can catch the eye. Listen for its characteristic high-pitched 'pip' or 'tuck-tuck-tuck' calls, distinct from the Broad-billed Tody.
When to spot
Resident year-round in its highland habitat. Active during daylight hours. Its calls can be heard throughout the day.
Unlike its more widespread cousin, the Broad-billed Tody, this species is restricted to higher elevations, showcasing ecological specialization within a small island.
