Mute Swan x Trumpeter Swan Hybrid

Mute Swan x Trumpeter Swan Hybrid

Not yet spotted on Fladder
Spotted
This hybrid combines features of the widespread Mute Swan and the native North American Trumpeter Swan. It may exhibit an intermediate bill color or shape, often lacking the Mute Swan's prominent knob but not quite matching the Trumpeter's entirely straight black bill.
Where to spot
Rarely occurs in the wild, primarily in areas where both species coexist, or more commonly in captive waterfowl collections. Mute Swans are an invasive species in some parts of the Trumpeter Swan's range.
How to spot
Look for a large white swan. Pay very close attention to the bill: it might be black with a hint of orange, or show a slight lump where the Mute Swan's knob would be, but less developed. Consider the gape line and overall head shape.
When to spot
Year-round in areas with mixed populations, particularly in parks or managed wetlands where both species are present.
Such hybrids can be a significant identification challenge in the field, as they often exhibit subtle mixed characteristics rather than obvious, clear-cut features.
