Spotted
This hybrid combines the distinctive head markings of the Bar-headed Goose (Anser indicus) with the black and white patterns of the Barnacle Goose (Branta leucopsis).
Where to spot
Often found in parks, wetlands, and agricultural areas, particularly in Europe where both species are present (Barnacle Goose native, Bar-headed often feral or escapee). Less common in wild populations.
How to spot
Identify by a blend of plumage features: look for faint banding on the head (from Bar-headed) combined with the striking black neck and white face of the Barnacle Goose. Body plumage will likely be a mix of grey and black/white.
When to spot
Can be observed year-round in areas with established feral populations, but most actively during breeding season (spring) and when congregating in larger flocks in autumn/winter.
Bar-headed Geese are renowned for flying over the Himalayas, and their offspring, even hybrids, may inherit impressive flight endurance, though this hybrid is often found in more settled populations.
