Spotted
The Andean Cinnamon Teal is the nominate subspecies of the Cinnamon Teal, commonly found in the high-altitude wetlands of the Andes. Males display the iconic rich cinnamon plumage.
Where to spot
Exclusively found in the Andes Mountains of South America, from southern Colombia south through Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Chile, and Argentina. They prefer high-altitude lakes, bogs, and marshlands.
How to spot
Identify the male by its striking uniform cinnamon color and bright red eye. Females are brown with a large bill. Pay attention to their high-altitude habitat, which helps distinguish them from other subspecies.
When to spot
Can be observed year-round in their Andean habitats, though breeding activity peaks during the local spring and summer months (September-February).
This subspecies is adapted to the harsh conditions of high-altitude environments, often found at elevations where few other duck species thrive.
