The Mulga Parrot, also known as the Many-coloured Parrot (Psephotellus varius), is a vibrant parrot species native to arid and semi-arid regions of Australia. Males are spectacularly colored with shades of green, red, yellow, and blue.
Where to spot
Found in arid and semi-arid woodlands, mallee, and scrublands across inland Australia, from Western Australia to Queensland.
How to spot
Males are unmistakable with their multi-colored plumage, including a yellow forehead, red nape, and green body with blue wings. Females are duller. Listen for their soft, warbling calls.
When to spot
Active during daylight hours, often seen in pairs or small groups. Most visible when feeding on the ground or in low shrubs in the early morning and late afternoon. Resident species.
