A large, secretive pheasant native to Southeast Asia, known for its extraordinarily long tail feathers. Males use these elaborate feathers in courtship displays.
Where to spot
Dense primary evergreen and montane forests in Vietnam, Laos, and Peninsular Malaysia.
How to spot
Extremely shy and difficult to spot. Listen for its distinctive call, and look for signs of its presence such as tracks or disturbed leaf litter. Patience and stealth are crucial in its dense forested habitat.
When to spot
Most active during the early morning and late afternoon. Males are often heard calling during the breeding season (typically March-May).
