Spotted
Wood's Laughingthrush is a medium-sized species with olive-brown plumage and subtle markings. It is typically a shy and secretive bird, preferring dense undergrowth in montane forests. This species is endemic to Taiwan.
Where to spot
Endemic to the island of Taiwan. It typically inhabits broadleaf forests, mixed forests, and bamboo thickets, primarily at mid to high elevations.
How to spot
Listen for its loud, often somewhat raucous calls. While they can be shy, they are often heard before seen. Look for movements in dense undergrowth or low branches, paying attention to its generally drab olive-brown plumage.
When to spot
Present year-round on Taiwan. They are most vocal during the breeding season (spring to early summer) and are best observed during the early morning and late afternoon.
Wood's Laughingthrush was formerly considered a subspecies of the Plain Laughingthrush (*Pterorhinus perspicillatus*), but genetic and vocal evidence supported its elevation to full species status.
