Spotted
The Chestnut-eared Laughingthrush is a strikingly patterned species, named for the prominent chestnut-brown patches on its ear coverts. This vocal and social bird is typically found in small, active groups foraging in the undergrowth of montane forests. It is native to parts of Southeast Asia.
Where to spot
Found in mainland Southeast Asia, including parts of Myanmar, Thailand, and southwestern China. It inhabits evergreen and mixed deciduous forests, bamboo thickets, and dense scrub, often at mid to high elevations.
How to spot
Listen for its varied calls, which can include whistles and chattering notes. Look for groups foraging in dense undergrowth or low on tree branches. The chestnut ear patches are the most reliable identification mark.
When to spot
Resident throughout its range and observable year-round. Activity peaks during the early morning and late afternoon. During the breeding season, pairs are more vocal.
The chestnut ear patches provide excellent camouflage among the fallen leaves and bark of its forest habitat, allowing it to blend in while foraging on the ground.
