Spotted
The Moorland Chat is a rather plain, terrestrial chat found at high altitudes, often in open, grassy or rocky moorland environments. Its plumage is generally drab brown, providing good camouflage.
Where to spot
Found in East Africa, specifically in high-altitude moorlands and grasslands of countries like Ethiopia, Kenya, and Tanzania, typically above 2,000 meters.
How to spot
Search in open, high-altitude grasslands and moorlands, particularly near scattered rocks or tussocks. It is often found on the ground. Its camouflaged plumage requires careful scanning; listen for its soft calls.
When to spot
Year-round resident. Most easily observed during the breeding season (often linked to rainy seasons) when males may sing from slightly elevated perches.
This species is sometimes known as the 'Dusky Moorland Chat' due to its duller plumage compared to other chats, helping it blend into the often bleak, high-altitude landscapes.
