Spotted
The Blue-capped Redstart is a small, elegant bird distinguished by the male's glossy blue crown and black face, contrasting with rich rufous underparts. Females are more subdued in coloration.
Where to spot
Found across South and Southeast Asia, including the Himalayas, China, and parts of Indochina, typically inhabiting temperate forests, mixed woodlands, and clearings, often at high elevations.
How to spot
Look in open forest undergrowth, along forest edges, and in clearings, often perching on low branches. Watch for its characteristic tail-flicking behavior. Its melodious song is a good clue to its presence.
When to spot
Year-round resident in most areas, with some altitudinal migration in winter. Best observed during the breeding season (spring to early summer) when males are most vocal.
Its genus name, Phoenicurus, means 'fire-tail' in Greek, referring to the characteristic rufous or orange tail that many redstarts exhibit and often flick.
