Spotted
The Small Cackling Goose (Branta hutchinsii minima) is the smallest subspecies of Cackling Goose, known for its tiny stature, short bill, and dark, sooty-brown plumage with a prominent white neck ring.
Where to spot
Breeds primarily in the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta region of western Alaska. Winters mainly in the Willamette Valley of Oregon and the Central Valley of California.
How to spot
Its diminutive size is the most striking feature; it's noticeably smaller than even other Cackling Geese. Look for its very dark, almost sooty body plumage and a distinct white neck ring. Its calls are often high-pitched and squeaky.
When to spot
Best seen during migration (late September-early November and March-April) and throughout the winter (November-March) in its Pacific Flyway wintering grounds.
