Spotted
This uncommon hybrid results from the interbreeding of the Eurasian Wigeon and the Eurasian Teal. Individuals typically exhibit a fascinating blend of the wigeon's rounded head and the teal's small size and agile nature, along with mixed plumage characteristics.
Where to spot
Found in wetlands across Eurasia where the ranges of Eurasian Wigeons and Eurasian Teals overlap, both during breeding and wintering periods. Look in shallow freshwater habitats.
How to spot
Look for a duck with a wigeon-like head shape but smaller body size, or a teal-like body with unusual head markings resembling a wigeon. The speculum and bill shape should be examined for intermediate features. Listen for calls that combine elements of both species.
When to spot
Best observed during autumn and spring migration or in wintering grounds when both parent species are present.

Wigeons are primarily grazers, feeding on emergent vegetation and terrestrial grasses, while teals are more active dabblers. A hybrid between them might display intermediate feeding preferences.
