Spotted
The Tule Goose is a rare and distinct subspecies of the Greater White-fronted Goose, characterized by its larger size, darker plumage, and typically heavier, darker bill. It has a very restricted breeding and wintering range.
Where to spot
Breeds in coastal South-central Alaska. Winters almost exclusively in the Sacramento Valley of California, primarily in wetlands dominated by dense Tule reeds.
How to spot
Look for a goose that is noticeably larger and darker-bodied than other White-fronted Geese, with a heavier and darker bill. They often associate with other goose species but can be distinguished by these specific features and their preference for dense marshy habitats.
When to spot
The wintering season (October to March) is the only reliable time to observe them, specifically in their Californian wintering grounds.
The Tule Goose is one of the most genetically distinct and rarest subspecies of the White-fronted Goose, with a very small population and highly specific habitat requirements tied to the dense Tule reed marshes.
