Spotted
The Minor Barbet is a small to medium-sized African barbet, often appearing drab with brownish upperparts and paler, streaked underparts. It is typically found in drier woodlands.
Where to spot
Dry woodlands, acacia savannas, and scrubland in Central and Southern Africa, including Angola, Democratic Republic of Congo, Zambia, and Tanzania.
How to spot
Listen for its distinctive, somewhat mournful calls. Look for it foraging in the mid-canopy of trees or perched quietly. Its rather plain plumage can make it blend in.
When to spot
Year-round; often heard calling during the cooler parts of the day.
Despite its rather subdued appearance, the Minor Barbet, like other barbets, has a sturdy bill perfect for drilling into wood to create nesting cavities.
