Spotted
The Lemon-rumped Tinkerbird is a diminutive African barbet, primarily green with streaked underparts and a distinctive bright lemon-yellow patch on its rump and sometimes forehead.
Where to spot
Humid lowland forests and secondary growth, often near swampy areas, in West Africa, from Guinea to Nigeria.
How to spot
Listen for its high-pitched, often rapid 'tink-tink-tink' call. Scan the mid to upper canopy for tiny green birds, and look for the lemon-yellow rump or forehead patch.
When to spot
Year-round; often heard calling persistently, especially in the early morning.
Despite its tiny size, the Lemon-rumped Tinkerbird has a surprisingly loud and persistent call, helping it to be located in the dense canopy.
