Spotted
The Mexican Wood Owl is a large, dark-eyed owl found in the mountainous cloud forests of Central America. Its cryptic plumage helps it blend into the dense tropical canopy.
Where to spot
Inhabits humid montane and cloud forests, typically at higher elevations. Its distribution spans from southern Mexico through Guatemala, Honduras, and El Salvador.
How to spot
Listen for its unique hooting calls that echo through the misty forests. Spotting them can be very challenging due to their dense habitat and nocturnal habits; careful scanning with a spotlight may be necessary.
When to spot
Strictly nocturnal. The best opportunities for observation are during the night, primarily by listening for their vocalizations.
This species was formerly considered a subspecies of the Rufous-banded Owl but has been elevated to full species status based on vocal and morphological differences.
