A medium-sized, iridescent green hummingbird with characteristic violet-blue patches on its 'ears,' the Green Violetear is a common and widespread species. It is highly adaptable, often found in a variety of habitats.
Where to spot
Widely distributed from central Mexico through Central America and into northern South America (Colombia, Ecuador, Venezuela). Found in montane forests, forest edges, clearings, coffee plantations, gardens, and urban areas.
How to spot
Look for its shimmering green body and prominent violet ear patches. It frequently perches on exposed branches and is often seen visiting a variety of flowering plants or feeders. Listen for its sharp, buzzing calls.
When to spot
Year-round. Active throughout the day, particularly in the early morning and late afternoon. Most visible during flowering seasons.
