Spotted
The Splendid Sabrewing is a large, robust hummingbird known for its iridescent green plumage and the distinctive broad, stiff outer primary feathers of the male, which produce an audible whirring sound in flight. It is a striking inhabitant of humid lowland and montane forests.
Where to spot
Found across northern South America, including Venezuela, the Guianas (Guyana, Suriname, French Guiana), and northern Brazil, inhabiting humid lowland and foothill forests.
How to spot
Look for them feeding at large flowering trees and shrubs, especially those with tubular flowers, in forest edges, clearings, and along rivers. Males often perch conspicuously. Listen for their loud, distinctive calls and the whirring of their wings.
When to spot
Resident year-round throughout its range, with activity peaking in the early morning and late afternoon. They are often most vocal during the breeding season.

The 'sabre-like' appearance and sound of the male's primary feathers are created by their unique structure, allowing them to produce a distinct mechanical hum during display flights.
