As its name suggests, this is the largest hummingbird in the world, a truly impressive bird with a unique slow, hawk-like flight that sets it apart from its smaller relatives.
Where to spot
High-altitude Andean plateaus and valleys, semi-arid scrub, and open woodlands from southern Colombia south through Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Chile, and Argentina.
How to spot
Look for a hummingbird about the size of a swift, with relatively dull brown-green plumage and a noticeably slow, deliberate wingbeat. It often perches prominently on branches or wires.
