Spotted
The Masked Bunting, also known as the Japonicus Bunting, is a medium-sized bunting found in East Asia. Males have a distinctive black 'mask' or facial pattern.
Where to spot
Breeds in parts of Russia (Sakhalin, Kuril Islands) and Japan (Hokkaido). Winters in southern Japan and parts of coastal Asia. Found in open woodlands, scrub, and sometimes wetlands.
How to spot
Look for it in grassy or scrubby areas. The male's black 'mask' around the eye is a good identification feature. Listen for its short, clear song.
When to spot
Best observed during the breeding season in summer in its northern range, or during migration (spring and autumn) and winter in Japan.
