Spotted
The Orange-bellied Fruit Dove is a vibrant species characterized by its bright orange patch on the belly and a purple-pink patch on the breast, contrasting with its green body. It is a beautiful resident of lowland forests in New Guinea.
Where to spot
Found on New Guinea and surrounding islands, inhabiting lowland rainforests, gallery forests, and mangroves.
How to spot
Scan the mid to upper canopy of fruiting trees. Despite their bright colors, they can be well-camouflaged. Listen for their distinctive soft, hollow hoots or purring calls, which are often the first indication of their presence.
When to spot
Active during daylight hours, especially in the mornings and late afternoons, when foraging for various fruits. It is a resident species, present year-round.
The intensity of its orange belly patch can vary slightly across its range, adding to the subtle beauty and identification challenges for birdwatchers across its varied habitats.
