The Barrow's Goldeneye is a striking medium-sized diving duck, closely related to the Common Goldeneye. Males have a distinct purplish-glossed head and a crescent-shaped white patch below the eye.
Where to spot
Primarily in western North America (rocky coastal areas and mountain lakes) and Iceland. Winters mainly along coasts and large freshwater bodies.
How to spot
Males are unmistakable with their crescent-shaped white face patch and purplish head gloss. Females have a steeper forehead and often a yellow-orange bill, distinguishing them from female Common Goldeneyes.
When to spot
Best observed during winter on coastal estuaries and large lakes; migrates to northern freshwater lakes for breeding in spring and summer.
