Spotted
This common hybrid is a cross between the widespread Mallard and the Pacific Black Duck, often seen in Australasia where Mallards have been introduced. It typically displays plumage that is intermediate between the two parent species.
Where to spot
Freshwater wetlands, rivers, and coastal estuaries throughout Australia, New Zealand, and other Pacific islands where Mallards have established populations.
How to spot
Look for a bird that is generally darker than a pure Mallard but has a more distinct facial pattern (supercilium and malar stripe) than a pure Pacific Black Duck. The speculum might be a duller blue or green compared to a pure Mallard.
When to spot
Year-round, as these ducks are generally resident in their range.

The extensive hybridization between these two species poses a significant conservation concern for the native Pacific Black Duck, as it can lead to genetic swamping and a loss of distinct populations.
