Spotted
This hybrid exhibits a mix of the predominantly white plumage of the Snow Goose and the grey-brown body with black belly bars of the White-fronted Goose. Individuals can be highly variable, often appearing as pale grey geese with white heads.
Where to spot
Most frequently observed in North America during winter, in areas where Snow Geese and White-fronted Geese congregate, such as extensive agricultural fields and large wetlands. Also found in various waterfowl collections.
How to spot
Look for geese with a predominantly white head and neck but a grey body with distinct black belly bars. Some individuals may be mostly white with grey mottling or vice versa. The bill structure might also appear intermediate between the two parent species.
When to spot
The wintering season (October to March) is the best time for observation in North America.

These hybrids are not uncommon in areas where large flocks of both Snow Geese and White-fronted Geese mix, particularly in North American wintering grounds, which can pose interesting identification challenges for birdwatchers.
