Spotted
The Australian Shelduck (*Tadorna tadornoides*) is a large, attractive waterfowl species endemic to southern Australia and Tasmania. Males have a dark body with a white neck ring, while females display a more contrasting white eye-ring and face patch.
Where to spot
Found across southern Australia, including Tasmania, particularly in wetlands, lakes, dams, and open agricultural areas near water. They are less common in the arid interior.
How to spot
Look for its distinctive dark plumage, often appearing almost black at a distance, with a prominent white band on the wings visible in flight. Males have a dark green head, while females have a white eye-ring and a white patch around the bill. They are often seen grazing on land or dabbling in shallow water.
When to spot
Can be observed throughout the year. Breeding season generally runs from late winter through spring (July to November in Australia).
