Spotted
This hybrid goose results from the interbreeding of the large, often white Snow Goose (Anser caerulescens) and the smaller Cackling Goose (Branta hutchinsii). Individuals exhibit a diverse mix of colors, sizes, and markings.
Where to spot
Common in agricultural fields, wetlands, and large open water bodies, particularly within the wintering and breeding ranges of Snow Geese and Cackling Geese across North America.
How to spot
Look for an intermediate size, larger than a Cackling Goose but smaller than a typical Snow Goose. Plumage might be a mix of white and grayish-brown, often with a dark head and neck, sometimes showing the 'grinning patch' of a Snow Goose.
When to spot
Best observed during the spring and autumn migration periods when large flocks of parent species are moving, or year-round in areas with mixed resident populations.

Hybrids between white and dark geese can display unique patterns, sometimes appearing piebald or with irregular patches of white and dark feathers, making each sighting distinct and a photographic challenge.
