Spotted
This common hybrid arises from interbreeding between the ubiquitous Mallard and the Mottled Duck. Birds typically display a mosaic of features from both species, reflecting their genetic heritage.
Where to spot
Primarily found in the southeastern United States and along the Gulf Coast wherever Mallards and Mottled Ducks coexist. Look in wetlands, ponds, agricultural fields, and even urban waterways.
How to spot
Identify by a combination of Mottled Duck characteristics (uniformly brown body) with Mallard traits such as hints of green iridescence on the head (males), a faint white neck ring, or varying amounts of white on the borders of the speculum (wing patch).
When to spot
Year-round in resident areas, as both parent species are largely non-migratory within their shared range.

Hybridization with Mallards is a major conservation concern for Mottled Ducks, as it can lead to 'genetic swamping,' where distinct Mottled Duck genes are diluted by the more numerous Mallard genes.
