Spotted
The Flying Steamer-Duck (*Tachyeres patachonicus*) is unique among the steamer-ducks as the only species in its genus capable of sustained flight. It is a large, stocky duck with a powerful build, found in the southern parts of South America.
Where to spot
Found along the coasts and inland lakes of southern South America, including Chile, Argentina, and the Falkland Islands. It prefers sheltered coastal waters, estuaries, and large freshwater lakes.
How to spot
Distinguish from other steamer-ducks by observing its ability to fly when startled. Look for its gray-brown plumage, often with a white patch behind the eye, and a yellowish or orange bill. It's often seen in coastal waters or large lakes, either swimming strongly or resting on rocks.
When to spot
Observable year-round. Breeding typically occurs in spring and summer (Southern Hemisphere), when pairs are more active.

Despite being able to fly, it is still an incredibly strong swimmer and diver, capable of 'steaming' across the water surface with powerful wingbeats like its flightless relatives.
