Spotted
The Stejneger's Scoter is a large diving duck very similar in appearance to the White-winged Scoter, from which it was recently separated as a distinct species. It is found across northeastern Asia.
Where to spot
Coastal waters of northeastern Asia, including Siberia, Japan, Korea, and China. Breeds on northern freshwater lakes and rivers in Siberia.
How to spot
Identification can be challenging; look for a large dark scoter with a white wing patch. For males, pay close attention to the bill structure, which is typically steeper and more pointed than the White-winged Scoter's.
When to spot
Primarily observed on coastal wintering grounds from autumn to spring; migrates inland to breed during the summer months.
