Spotted
This hybrid is a cross between the ubiquitous Mallard and the endemic Hawaiian Duck, found exclusively on the Hawaiian Islands. It represents a significant conservation challenge for the Hawaiian Duck due to genetic introgression.
Where to spot
Ponds, wetlands, and taro fields on the Hawaiian Islands, particularly on Kauai, Oahu, Maui, and Hawaii.
How to spot
Look for birds that are generally darker and less patterned than typical Mallards, but possess some green iridescence on the head or a more prominent speculum than a pure Hawaiian Duck. Observe in areas where both species are known to occur.
When to spot
Year-round, as both species are resident.
The Hawaiian Duck is one of only two duck species endemic to Hawaii, and hybridization with introduced Mallards is a primary threat to its genetic purity and long-term survival.
