Spotted
This rare hybrid results from the cross-breeding of the Cinnamon Teal and the Eurasian Teal. Such individuals exhibit an interesting blend of the rich rufous plumage of the Cinnamon Teal and the more subdued patterns of the Eurasian Teal.
Where to spot
Extremely rare; likely to occur in western North America where Cinnamon Teals are prevalent and vagrant Eurasian Teals may appear, or in parts of South America where Cinnamon Teals winter and Eurasian Teals might rarely occur.
How to spot
Look for a small, rufous-tinged dabbling duck that doesn't quite match a pure Cinnamon Teal (e.g., less intense rufous, different head markings) or a pure Eurasian Teal. The large blue wing patch (typical of Spatula ducks) combined with intermediate plumage points to this hybrid.
When to spot
Most likely during migration periods (spring or autumn) when ranges might momentarily overlap, or in wintering grounds for either species if a vagrant of the other is present.
Cinnamon Teals are closely related to Blue-winged Teals and are known for their striking rufous coloration in males. Hybrids with Eurasian Teals are exceptional sightings, indicating an unusual interspecies encounter.
