Spotted
This hybrid results from the interbreeding of the coastal Brant (Branta bernicla) and the widespread Cackling Goose (Branta hutchinsii). It's an uncommon sight, blending the unique features of both parent species.
Where to spot
Coastal estuaries, salt marshes, and adjacent agricultural fields, especially in regions of North America, Europe, and Asia where both species might converge during migration or wintering.
How to spot
Look for an intermediate size between the small Brant and the Cackling Goose. Plumage might show a darker body similar to a Brant, but with the distinct white cheek patch and black neck of a Cackling Goose, or a more diffused white neck patch characteristic of some Brant subspecies. Vocalizations may also be a mix.
When to spot
Best observed during late autumn and early spring migration periods, or in wintering grounds where both species may co-occur.

Brant are primarily saltwater geese, while Cackling Geese prefer freshwater habitats, making this hybrid an interesting example of species bridging different ecological niches, often seen in areas where habitats converge.
