Spotted
This hybrid combines the large, grey body of the Greylag Goose with the distinctive white forehead and black belly bars of the White-fronted Goose. Its appearance is intermediate, often showing some degree of facial white and belly barring on a greylag-like frame.
Where to spot
Commonly found in Europe in areas where both Greylag Geese and White-fronted Geese co-occur, particularly during the winter months. Also present in zoological collections and waterfowl parks worldwide.
How to spot
Look for a goose with a grey body, potentially some faint white around the bill base, and black spotting or barring on the belly, which is atypical for a pure Greylag. The bill color might also be intermediate, such as an orange bill with a yellowish tint.
When to spot
Best observed during the wintering season (October to March) in Europe; year-round in captive settings.

Both parent species are widespread across parts of Europe and Asia, and hybridization can occur in the wild where their populations naturally mix, especially at shared feeding or resting sites during the non-breeding season.
