Spotted
The Chihuahuan Raven is a large, entirely black corvid found in the arid and semi-arid regions of southwestern North America. It is often confused with the Common Raven, but typically has a glossier, more blue-purple sheen.
Where to spot
Found in arid and semi-arid grasslands, deserts, and scrublands of the southwestern U.S. (Texas, New Mexico, Arizona) and northern Mexico.
How to spot
Distinguish from Common Raven by its slightly smaller size, more purplish sheen in good light, and often shorter, more rounded tail. Its calls are typically higher-pitched and more barking 'craw-craw' compared to the Common Raven's deeper croaks. Look in open, arid landscapes.
When to spot
Resident year-round. Active throughout the day. Large flocks can be observed during the non-breeding season, particularly around food sources.

Unlike Common Ravens, Chihuahuan Ravens often form larger flocks outside the breeding season, sometimes numbering in the thousands, especially when attracted to food sources like carrion.
