Spotted
The Madagascar Wood Rail (*Mentocrex kioloides*) is a medium-sized, highly secretive, rail-like bird endemic to Madagascar. It is renowned for its elusive nature and strong preference for dense forest undergrowth.
Where to spot
Primarily found in dense humid rainforests, bamboo forests, and dense thickets, particularly in eastern and northern Madagascar. It prefers areas with thick ground cover.
How to spot
Observation is extremely challenging. The best method to detect its presence is to listen intently for its characteristic calls. Patience is crucial; staking out near known calling sites might offer a brief glimpse as it moves through the undergrowth.
When to spot
Most active at dawn and dusk, when it forages discreetly. However, due to its secretive habits, its distinctive calls are far more frequently heard than the bird is seen.

Despite its 'rail' appearance and behavior, it belongs to the unique family Sarothruridae, commonly known as flufftails, which are distinct from the true rail family (Rallidae).
