Spotted
The Chestnut-headed Flufftail is a small, elusive bird inhabiting wet grasslands and swamps in southern and eastern Africa. Its presence is most reliably detected by its distinctive calls.
Where to spot
Marshes, wet grasslands, and sedge beds in eastern and southern Africa.
How to spot
Listen for its unusual 'whinnying' or 'trilling' call, often heard from dense cover. Sitting quietly by the edge of suitable habitat for extended periods is the best strategy.
When to spot
Most active vocally at dawn and dusk, especially during the breeding season (typically the austral summer).

Males of this species have a vivid chestnut head and breast, making them one of the more distinctly marked flufftails, though they remain incredibly difficult to see due to their shy nature.
