Spotted
The Lunulated Antbird is a medium-sized antbird, named for the crescent-shaped or 'lunulated' dark markings on its chest, contrasting with a paler throat. It also has a bare blue orbital ring.
Where to spot
Inhabits the understory of humid lowland forests in the western Amazon basin, specifically eastern Peru and western Brazil.
How to spot
Locate army ant swarms and patiently observe. The lunulated pattern on the chest and bare blue orbital ring are distinctive features. They can be very vocal.
When to spot
Year-round resident. Best observed during early morning and late afternoon when army ants are active.
This species is an obligate army-ant follower, relying heavily on the insects and other small animals flushed by ant swarms.
