Spotted
Loria's Satinbird is a strikingly iridescent bird found in the montane forests of New Guinea, known for the male's glossy, purple-black plumage. It is a unique species in the family Cnemophilidae.
Where to spot
Endemic to the montane rainforests of New Guinea, typically found at mid to high elevations (around 1,500-2,800 meters), preferring the forest canopy.
How to spot
Look for its glossy, dark plumage in the mid-to-upper canopy of montane forests. Males are more easily spotted due to their iridescence. Listen for its high-pitched, whistled calls.
When to spot
Resident year-round. Active during daylight hours. Males are most conspicuous during the breeding season when they display for females.
