Spotted
The Choco Oropendola is a large, glossy black icterid with a striking pale yellowish bill and bright yellow outer tail feathers. It is an inhabitant of humid lowland forests in a restricted range in western Colombia and Ecuador.
Where to spot
Restricted to the Chocó biogeographic region of western Colombia and northwestern Ecuador. Inhabits humid lowland and foothill forests, forest edges, and clearings.
How to spot
Look for large, entirely glossy black birds with a yellow tail and a pale bill. Listen for its distinctive, gurgling and bubbling vocalizations, characteristic of oropendolas.
When to spot
Year-round resident. Best observed during the breeding season when they congregate in nesting colonies, or during general foraging activity in the canopy.
This species is often found in the same areas as other oropendolas, making careful observation of bill color and vocalizations crucial for identification.
